What is a Mommy Makeover?

Motherhood is often one of the most joyous occasions in a woman’s life. However, pregnancy, breastfeeding, and child-rearing can cause lasting changes to the body and negatively impact a woman’s self-esteem. Even with rigorous exercise and a healthy diet, attaining your pre-pregnancy figure can be a challenge. A mommy makeover is a combination of several plastic surgery and cosmetic procedures designed to address many of the common changes that result during and after pregnancy. Dr. Kevin Cook can help rejuvenate your body and address cosmetic concerns such as:

  • Isolated fat deposits

  • Excess skin around the abdomen or breasts

  • Lost breast volume

  • Sagging breasts

  • Weak or damaged abdominal muscles

  • Fine lines and wrinkles

  • Melasma (pregnancy mask)

Good Candidates for a Mommy Makeover

You are a good candidate for a mommy makeover if you no longer plan to get pregnant, since future pregnancies can result in disruption of the results achieved by the mommy makeover surgery. Ideal candidates are no longer breastfeeding and have maintained a stable weight for several months.

The best candidates for a mommy makeover are in good overall health, are at a healthy BMI of under 30, have realistic expectations, and have a positive outlook.

Women with high blood pressure or diabetes should discuss these health issues with Dr. Cook during their consultation. Patients must avoid smoking in the weeks before the procedure and during the recovery process.

Your Mommy Makeover Consultation

At the beginning of the consultation process, Dr. Cook will examine your medical history and conduct a thorough physical exam to determine if you are a good candidate for a mommy makeover. If you are a good candidate for the procedure, he will create a detailed plan for your mommy makeover. After carefully listening to your aesthetic concerns and surgical goals, he can then design a treatment plan to meet your expectations and attain a more youthful and revitalized appearance. Dr. Cook aims to fully inform each woman about her options, and thoroughly discusses the potential risks and benefits of all surgeries to allow you to make educated decisions about your health and your body.

Mommy Makeover Procedure

The length of a mommy makeover will depend upon how many procedures are being simultaneously performed. Some women choose to have all of their procedures performed at once while others choose to divide the procedures among two or three visits. With a wide range of procedures available, Dr. Cook can artfully restore your body to its pre-pregnancy figure while still achieving results that look naturally beautiful. Liposuction can eliminate fat deposits, a tummy tuck can repair loose or torn abdominal muscles, breast augmentation can restore lost breast volume, and a breast lift can reverse any sagging of the breasts.

Recovery and Results

The duration of your recovery after a mommy makeover will depend upon which procedures are combined to achieve your surgical goals. As with most surgeries, patients can expect some swelling and bruising, though oral pain medication can usually manage any post-operative discomfort with ease. Compression garments or vests may be worn for several weeks after your procedure to aid in the healing process.

Patients can sleep elevated using several pillows to lessen post-operative discomfort and help reduce tension on incisions. Sleeping on one’s back with legs bent slightly at the hips is recommended.

Many women can return to their normal daily activities within one to two weeks (depending on the procedures performed), though Dr. Cook recommends having some help around the house and with childcare as you should not engage in any heavy lifting for a while. Strenuous exercise should be avoided for four to eight weeks.

Patients will return for a follow-up appointment so that Dr. Cook can check on the status of their healing process. At this time, sutures will be removed.

A mommy makeover can be a great way to give back to yourself after all of the sacrifices motherhood can necessitate. Most of our mommy makeover patients experience a renewed sense of confidence in their appearance as they enjoy their youthful, beautiful, and natural-looking results.
