Why Consider Infant Ear Correction?

Irregular ear shape at birth can potentially impact a child’s physical and emotional development later on in life. Studies suggest that children with facial abnormalities, particularly misshapen ears, can more often suffer peer ridicule and bullying. As a result, these children may be more likely to exhibit signs of low self-esteem and anxiety; but it doesn’t have to be that way. If your newborn has an ear malformation, EarWell™ ear molding performed within the first two weeks of life may provide a quick, effective, and reliable method for adjusting ear shape. Successful treatment with the EarWell™ device can typically prevent the need for corrective ear surgery (otoplasty) later on in childhood and may provide the opportunity for healthier social and psychological experiences.

Is My Baby a Candidate for the EarWell™ Procedure?

Approximately one third of infant ear deformities self-correct during the first week after birth. If your infant’s ear(s) remains irregularly shaped after the first week, it is likely that he or she may be a good candidate for ear molding with the EarWell™ Infant Ear Correction System. Dr. Cook can examine your newborn and determine if the non-invasive EarWell™ device is the best possible solution for reshaping the ear(s). If you want to find out if your child is a candidate, we encourage you to contact our office to make an appointment with Dr. Cook as soon as possible.

The EarWell™ Procedure

The EarWell™ Infant Ear Correction System is a clinically-tested medical product that can be applied to your child’s ears within days or weeks after birth. This non-surgical and non-invasive procedure requires no anesthesia, sedation, or medication. During the EarWell™ application process, Dr. Cook carefully assembles the device around the affected ear. As he constructs the EarWell™, he also applies ear modeling putty to hold the ear firmly in its proper new shape. The ingenious design of the device keeps the ear snugly contained as reshaping takes place. Over a course of weeks the device remains intact and ear shape is gently remodeled until the ear is fully corrected.

Are there Risks with the EarWell™ Device?

Complications with the EarWell™ device are extremely rare and usually easily treated. Potential conditions that can develop include superficial skin irritations or allergies. Making sure the device is fitted properly and does not become loose for a prolonged period of time can further reduce occurrence of these skin concerns. Having a skilled and experienced doctor perform treatment with EarWell™ can also greatly reduce any risks. Dr. Cook completed a year-long fellowship in craniofacial surgery at the Craniofacial Center in Dallas, Texas where he performed the EarWell™ procedure on infants. This patient-centered experience provided Dr. Cook with the education and resources needed to effectively handle difficult challenges while enhancing his passion for working with children and their parents.
